After spending over 30 years attending storage auctions of every kind I have to comment on the new shows on the discovery channel. First for the most part it is all TV drama and nothing more. Of course they do buy the units and great finds are found by the people who buy the units BUT the people involved in the units are unreal and mostly ass holes. I have noticed a couple of incidents where the auctioneer totally lost control of the auctions. In real life the people involved would have been escorted off the property. Buying storage units involves more than finding that great treasure. It also involves having a place to sell what you find and getting rid of all the trash you also find in the unit. This includes the large items such as worn out couchs, busted washers and dryers and old stinky matresses no one wants. Old pots and pans, dishes no one will buy and more things you can never get rid of unless you haul it to a dump. If you live in a rural area this may be cheap to do but I doubt if it would be so in Los Angeles California or Chicago Ill. At the present time lots of people are losing everything they own but because they are dead beats but because our government has put the economy in the tank. Again finding boxes and boxes of photo and family papers is a responsibility which I believe needs to be addressed. In some cases the storage company will allow the personal papers and photos to be returned or left at the location. If not let me caution you to be careful in contacting the original owners. If you do so and the items are wanted then find a neutral place to drop them off. Another thing about these shows are the amounts of money being paid for the units and in most cases this is just for spite or the immature nature of the people on the shows. Don't take this attitude into a real life situation at a storage auction. This is serious business for some people who actual depend on feeding their families |
